This Blu-ray Disc edition has been mastered from the restoration prepared by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung. No digital stabilization has been performed on the relatively stable picture. Apparently, no digital clean-up has been done on the HD scan made from a very-good to excellent 35mm source print as there remains a spare amount of dust, speckling, schmutz, exposure fluctuations, and other print flaws. With the increased resolution of Blu-ray Disc, this edition fares slightly better than Kino’s 2006 DVD edition noted below.
The film is presented with a lively music score composed by Aljoscha Zimmermann and performed on piano, violin and percussion by Ensemble Studio.
Supplementary material includes a presentation of Meyer from Berlin (1919); and audio commentary for both films by author Joseph McBride.
This is our recommended home video edition of the film for North American collectors.
